Kaitaia Swamp Drainage Rate
The following telegram received by Mr. C. W. Boswell from Hon. H. G. R. Mason, after consultation with Hon. W. Nash, regarding the Kaitaia drainage rate is self-explanatory and should be of prime interest to a large number of our readers : “I have made enquiries in reference to complaints made at Kaitaia as to delay in consideration of the problem of adjustment of drainage rates and learn the reason for the delay in giving final consideration to the problem and to your representations. Any remission made now would in many cases go to the benefit of the mortgagee rather than to the benefit of the occupant. It was for this reason that the Hon. Walter Nash advised deputations that the whole problem should be deferred until after the Mortgagors and Lessees’ Rehabilitation Commissions had completed their work. The Adjustment Commission’s work in the Northern district will be completed about December of this year and immediately after that the problem of adjustment of these rates can and will be given attention by the Government and by following this timetable it is ensured that remissions will go to the benefit of the occupant and not to the benefit of his mortgagee. I trust that the position as explained by the Hon. Mr. Nash is now clear. Mr. Nash expressly authorised me to give his assurance that the settlers would receive justice in this matter.”
