Annual Meeting of Kaitaia Pig Club

There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Kaitaia Pig Club held in the Masonic hall on 22nd April. The chairman submitted the following report : “I have much pleasure in submitting to you a report of the activities of our Club during its first year’s operations. Our club was formed with a membership of 12 and a limit of 14 ; the two vacancies have been filled by Messrs. Rowe and Powell. We were very fortunate in being able to secure such an excellent Berkshire sow as our foundation animal, through our very able supervisor, Mr. W. A. Beattie. She had nine young pigs which averaged 36 lbs at eight weeks of age. This in my opinion was very good when we take into consideration the fact that it was a maiden litter and that the sow was transported from the Waikato during pregnancy. Eight of the young pigs passed the desired type test. We decided to retain for breeding purposes the best of the young sows, and have made arrangements to exchange with another club the best of the young boars, so that your club now owns three stud breeding pigs. Six young pigs have been distributed to members according to the draw. The sow was exhibited at the Kaitaia Show and was successful in winning first prize and was very favourably commented on by the public. Members of the club have built a pig house according to the Pig Council’s specifications, on the property of the custodian, Mi\ McDonald. The feeding pen and grass run are not yet completed. The finances of the club are in a very healthy condition, showing a credit balance of £l2 14/-. Mr. McDonald has proved himself a very capable custodian and much of the success of the club is due to his guardianship.”

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year : Chairman— Mr. H. M. Thompson ; Vice-Chair-man—Mr. R. H. Michie ; Secretary —Mr. W. J. Bell ; Selection Committee—The District Supervisor and Messrs. Thompson, Michie and Bell ; Delegate to Annual Meeting of Northland District Pig Council—Mr. H. M. Thompson. The following remits were passed for consideration at the annual meeting of the Pig Council : “That pressure be brought to bear on the Government to have the tariff on pig foods reduced to enable producers of bacon to compete with the Danish product on equal terms.” “That the Department of Agriculture be urged to inaugurate a scheme to recognise the breeding qualities 0 f boars which have sired litters from-a number of different sows.”
