MEMORIAL TO LATE COLONEL ALLEN BELL

A memorial tablet of granite, marking the spot of the scattering of the ashes of the late Colonel Allen Bell was recently affixed to a large rock at Kapowairua, Spirits. Bay, by Messrs. L. W. Keene and E. T. Frost. The locality is a suitable one for a memorial to the late soldier-politi-cian w'ho did so much to bring the North into prominence by his untiring energy and optimism. Situated alongside an old Maori battlefield and under the shadow" of Mangapiko, one of the most famous strongholds of the Aupori tribe, it can be seen by tourists and others who take Spirits Bay in their itinerary. The locality' had a special attraction for the late colonel who was also a journalist of repute, and who did much to collect and pi*eserve the history and traditions of this interesting spot. MANGONUI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Owing to the prevalence of the measles epidemic in March the annual meeting of the Mangonui Women’s Institute was cancelled and the April meeting was held in McKay’s hall on Thursday, April 7th, Mrs. W. A. Wrathail presiding over a full attendance of members. The annual i*epoi't and balance sheet were read and adopted and officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow's : President—Mrs. R. T. Wrathail ; VicePresident—Mrs. S. Harris ; Committee—Mesdames H. G. Wrathail, D. J. McKay and R. Dibble. Owing to the pressure of business Mrs. W. A. Wrathail was unable to seek re-elec-tion as president, but would still remain a member and would ahvays do her best to further the interests of the Institute. The retiring secretary, Miss D. Wilton will also remain a member. The competition for the month was a nut loaf, the winners being Mrs. C. W. Harris first, and Mrs. R, T. Wrathail second. The competition arranged for next month is an embroidered tea-towel from a flour-bag to be given in for Paddy’s Market which is to be held later in the year, A vote of thanks was passed to the librarian, Mr. King, and a small gift is to be presented to him for his services for the year. Visitors for the day W'ere Mrs. Feisst and Miss Houston who also acted as scx*utineers. Hostesses were Mesdames H. G. Wrathail and R. Lay bourn.
