Votes of Thanks For the donation of £lO 10/- to the funds of the Society, the Kaitaia Town Board is to be thanked. a section next to the billiard saloon has been prepared by Mr. J. T. B. Taaffe and Mr. Hill has granted permission to use the frontage of his section next to the post office. Messrs. D. Berry was appointed to report on this work at the next meeting of the committee to be held in three weeks’ time. It is probable that the Highways Board will be planting trees, where possible, on highways, and the work of the Society in this direction will be such that it will fit in with the Board’s work. The Minister in Charge of Scenic Preservation, Hon. F. Langstone, wrote, in reply to the Society’s request that the Crown lands alongside the road at the Herekino gorge be gazetted as scenic reserves, stating that as such land was now forest reserve. there was no danger of the bush being cut and so its preservation was assured. As the white butterfly is playing havoc among the flowers in the district, the secretary was instructed to see if oh.) Department of Agriculture could not supply parasites for liberation in the district. A suggestion was made by the presidenc that in commemoration of the centenary of New Zealand in 1940. that Centenary park in Kaitaia be properly laid out with flowerbeds and shiubs, space being left for a children’s playground. This was considered as a very fine sugestion for a county-wide effort and a suitable commemoration of the occasion, and effoits are to be made to interest the local authorities and the people of the district in the proposal.
