MARLIN LANDED IN DOUBTLESS BAY.
On Sunday, Mr. Stan Ellis, fishing from the launch “Reelemin,” landed a 3201 b striped marlin between Cape Karikari and Merita Bay. The fish gave a splendid display of leaping and was landed in 35 minutes. The fish was officially weighed at Mangonui by Mr. R. T. Wrathall, president of the Mangonui Swordfish Club. Mr. Ellis is exploring northern waters, and between Doubtless Bay and Houhora Heads seven other swordfish were risen, two being foulhooked in Doubtless Bay and lost. Mr. Ellis is the holder of “Long” cup for the heaviest fish caught in local waters and by all appearances will retain the trophy this season. Further fishing in Doubtless Bay and off the surrounding islands was carried out by Mr. Ellis this week. Having left Mangonui wharf at 9.30 a.m., Mr. Ellis returned at 11 a.m. with a fine striped marlin. The fish was hooked in Doubtless Bay, just outside the entrance to the Mangonui harbour, proving that the fish are very close in this season. A large school of porpoises was seen inside the entrance of the Mangonui harbour on Sunday afternoon, basking on the surface in the sun. Girls’ Bible Class Camp The annual Methodist Girls’ Bible Class camp will be held this Easter at Broadwood, commencing on Thursday evening. Members of the various Bible Classes from Kaikohe northwards will be in the camp which will be under the direction of Mrs. Fricker as Camp Mother. The time will be passed in study and recreation.
