ROADWORKS IN THE COUNTY

Full advantage of the fine weather of the last week or two has been taken by the various metal contractors in the county, and maintenance metal has been spread on the majority of main highways. The metalling of the new filling and cutting at Kawakawa coiner is in hand, and this section of the main road should not hold up traffic during wet weather and cause Church road to be used as a detour route. This section is now above normal flood level, the first work of this nature to be undertaken by the County Council in this district under the Highway Board’s scheme of increased subsidy, and it is hoped that further work of a like nature will be undertaken next season. Fisher’s filling at Fairburn, and the Oruaiti creek are now in hand and these should be completed before the winter, so that for this season three points on main highway s, that previously held up traffic, will be above the normal flood level.

The P.W.D. is proceeding apace with the metalling of the four miles of road from Awanui to the Small Farms Settlement in the swamp area, and the Council graders are busy on various roads, a start being made this week on re-forming Spain’s road at Awanui. The work on the Kaingaroa-Lake Ohia section of the Awanui-Mangonui road, that was commenced early this season, should be completed before the winter, and this further section of this road will then be up to highway standard, and handed over to the Council as such by the P.W.D. The Town Board’s grader was working on this road this week.
