A rumour that the Government intended to raise £11,000,000 by an issue of non-interest-bearing Treasury bills to the Reserve Bank was denied last week by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. Some alarm has been expressed on the east coast at the possibility of a food shortage among the Maoris owing to the failure of their potato and kumara crops. The continued wet weather has been the cause of the crops failing to provide the usual yield, and, as the Maori relies a great deal on the kumara and the potato, this failure is a serious matter among a large number of natives.
