Deputations to Council

Access to Property at Takahue Mr. C. H. Quarterman waited on the Council asking that the unmetalled portion of Te Rore road be metalled in order to give him access to his property. He had had to fascine the unmetalled part a couple of times to get his cream out. The chairman suggested that the conditions under which the settlers on this particular part of the road labour, should be brought under the Department’s notice with the object of seeing if a grant could not be made to carry out the work. Crs. Thompson and Holder moved, and it was carried, that application be made to the Public Works Department for a special grant of £2OO for the formation and metalling needed to give Mi 1 . Quarterman reasonable access. * * * * Road Deviation at Lake Ohia Mr. Mate Urlich protested agamst the proposed deviation opposite his property at Lake Ohia as being detrimental to it as it would cut most cf the property off from the road. Cr. W. Steed pointed out that the road would ultimately become a main highway and the deviation shoi'tened it The engineer was instructed to inspect and report on the matter. * * * * Drain on Dairy Company’s Property Messrs. Vernon If. Reed (chairman) and L. A. Mclntosh (secretary) of the Dairy Company, waited on the Council in reference to the drain running through the. Company's propel ty at Awanui. The deputation was informed that the Council had no objection to it filling in the dram, and ‘lie engineer was instructed to open a new dram from the Dairy Company's junction to Spains road, in accordant e with his report, at an eac’y da,?. * * * * MAORI DOG MENACE From all parts of the district complaints have been made recently by farmers who have suffered loss in their flocks through the depredation of Maori dogs, and the matter was brought before the Council by Mr. Water Masters, who waited on it as a deputation in regard to the trouble and asked that some action should be taken to abate it.

Farmers were experiencing great loss through Maori dogs attacking their sheep, said Mr. Masters, and the trouble was growing all the time. The position was getting serious. They wished to see if the Council could help them in the matter. Most of the dogs complained of had no collars. Could the dog tax collector shoot the animals, or had he to sue in these cases. The chairman : You have my sympathy. Dogs not registered can be destroyed. Mr. A. F. MacKenzie, dog tax coleetor, explained that many owners did not put collars on their dogs as it interfered with their working, and was dangerous to the dogs in rough country. If he destroyed collarless dogs he might shoot a valuable animai. Mr. Masters : We would like the Council to take drastic measures, and give the collector an assistant to carry them out. The chairman suggested that assistance be given to the tax collector with the special object of dealing with unregistered dogs, and this was agreed to.
