Improving Backblock and District Roads

Hokianga County Carrying On Planned Scheme to Give Every Settler Metalled Access In addition to the maintenance works outlined in his report of the last meeting, of the Hokianga County Council, the Manager submitted a programme of works for side roads which it is hoped to complete during the 1933-34 season. Most of the expenditure is to cover metalling costs, and the amount given below is the amount applied for as Public Works contribution towards the cost of the work: Harrison’s Road, Umawera—Completion of metalling to Wooster’s, £SOO.

Harnett’s Road, Waimamaku—Metalling to Harnett’s and Ambler’s, £3BO.

Oue-Opara—Metalling from Junction to Clement’s, Rawson’s and Ferguson’s, £580. De Andrad’s Road—To De Andrad’s, Kjoller’s and Ford’s section, £2OO. Humphrey’s Road—Access to Boreham, Hodgson, Nash and others, £2OO. Kauapepe Road—Access to Welsh, Porritt and several others, £364. Umawera-Te Tio Completion of gaps in through cream route, £2OO. * Wekaweka—Completion of metall-

ing for 5 cream suppliers, £270. Smoothey’s Road, Waiotemarama — Access to Dutch, Fell and Andrewes sections, £340. Oue-Wharekawa Road —Completion of metalling to Petherbridge’s section and G. Pearson, £331. Ohuri Road—Completion to King’s, Welsford’s, Diez and others, £240. Wharepunga-Completion of through road to Mataraua, £l5O. Wharepunga Stream Bridge—£3oo. Renwick Road—Completion of metalling to Renwick’s section, Rogers, and others, £240. Ivydale-Motukiore Extension of metal from Warmington’s towards Harrison’s, £286.

Mangataipa Road, Mangamuka Access to McGovern and others, £IOO. Groves’ Road, Umawera —Access to Lees, Butler and Lees, £2OO. Hawkin’s Road, Motukaraka—Metalling to Bawden’s and Hawkins, £2OO. Rawhia Road—Access to Brownlee and Chapman Bros., £2OO.

Waikerikeri Road—Access to Austin, Culham, Bernard and Flood, £2OO. Okaka Road—Completion from Gordon’s to Cameron’s, £IOO. Mata Road—Access to Leach, McKenzie and Suaminon, on acct., £3OO. Access to J. Houston, section 14, Whangape S.D., £2OO. Tuoros - Omapere Completion of metalling Omapere hill, £l5O. Guthrey’s Road, Taheke—Access to Guthrey’s section, £2OO. Harris Road, Te Tio—Access to H. C. Harris, £IOO. In addition to the above items, which the County proposes to carry out, it is expected that work will commence on the completion of HorekeTaheke metalling within six weeks under the Public Works Department’s control. The County recommended that when this is completed, the men be transferred to complete Giles road, while another urgent matter is access to Guest and Cochrane and others, who require access to Tapu-wae-Whakarapa road. When these items are put in hand, OpononiOmapere settlers outlet will come next in order of urgency.
