The Northern Roads

A.A.A. Monthly Report The following is the report of the Northern Patrol on the state of the roads in the four Northernmost counties : Whangarei-Parakao-Kaikohe.—ls in very fair order. Whangarei-Kawakawa. The main highway from Kawakawa through Hikurangi is full of deep pot holes and badly in need of maintenance. The road is also pot holey near Hikurangi but improves as Kawakawa is peached. Owing to the amount of surface water at Whakapara and Hukerenui these portions will again become flooded after continuous heavy rain.

Whakapara-Russell. The surface especially near Helena Bay is pot holey and rough and after considerable rain the unbridged streams as usual hold up traffic. There is a large log in the Punaruku ford and traffic is advised to keep clear of the log as there are several washouts in the vicinity. Kawakawa-Ohaeawai.—The graders have been at work on this section and the travelling is more comfortable than usual.

Paihia-Waimate North. —At present the small clay gap requires chains after any rain, but it is hoped in the near future this gap will be metalled. Ohaeawai-Kaikohe. The grader and roller are at present at work on this section and the many pot holes of long standing are now receiving attention.

Kaikohe-Kauri Forests - Dargaville. —ln very fair order and passable at all times with the exception of that low lying section of the road at the flaxmill near Dargaville, where flood water has held up traffic considerably.

Ohaeawai-Kerikeri.—ln good order.

Ohaeawai-Waipapa-Kaeo—This surface is in fair order. Ohaeawai-Waiare-Kaeo. This alternative route provides good travelling, easy grades and is much appreciated from a scenic point of view by motorists.

Kaeo-Mangonui-Kaitaia.—This surface is fair except for occasional pot holes and motorists are advised to use care on the narrow portions especially between Mangonui and Fairburn., The dip at Fairburn store will also prove troublesome after continuous rain. Depth posts have been recently erected. The stream over the road at Oruaiti does not usually prove troublesome. Good progress has been made with the new bridge at the Kaeo-Whangaroa Junction. Kaitaia-Te Paki and Far North. The beach at present provides comfortable travelling and is quite safe providing the usual beach rules are observed and condition of tide considered. The road up to Te Paki stream is not advised at present. The inland road also is in bad order and requires chains.

Kaitaia-Herekino-Broadwood— This is now an all weather route. The new sections of metal are somewhat rough and will take time to consolidate.

Kaitaia-Mangamuka-Ohaeawai.— In very fair order except for the deep pot holes near Okaihau. A detour route is at present under construction on the Okaihau side of Rangiahua where a dangerous section of the road will be eliminated.
