Relief for Gumdiggers

Member Again Urges Government to Extend Help to Sorely Pressed Men The member for the district, Mr. H M. Rushworth, has again drawn the attention of Mr. Coates, as Minister for Public Works and Unemployment, to the desperate plight of the kauri gum producers owing to the heavy drop in prices, and urged that an extended credit be given to the Kauri Gum Board so that liberal advances may be made against the gum available for marketing, a suggestion strongly supported by the Board. Alternatively, he suggested that employment be found for gumdiggers at necessary protective work about the Ninety Mile Beach where sand drift is seriously menacing the Kaitaia swamp drainage works. The Minister in charge of Forests (who is responsible for checking sand drift) has personally inspected this area and is impressed with the urgent necessity of protective works there, and the putting of the work in hand would afford relief to the sorely pressed gum diggers.

Improving Mangonui’s Beaches

The Mangonui Beaches Improvement Association is endeavouring to raise sufficient funds to provide dressing sheds for bathers at the Taipa and Cooper’s Beaches. Accommodation of this kind is undoubtedly necessary since these beaches enjoy a wonderful popularity during summer months and attract settlers from all parts of the county. Those who patronise these pleasure resorts will be given an opportunity of contributing towards the funds of the movement by attending dances which are being arranged. Sports meetings will also be held at the beaches during the holiday season and by this means not only will an enjoyable outing be provided for the people of the district, but an opportunity will also be provided for the many campers to assist in the work of improvement. It is anticipated that everyone will cooperate in the activities of the Association and that its success will not be limited by parochial-mindedness. The “Northland Age” advertiseing columns will announce all functions arranged.
