Mangonui

Women’s Institute Miss Agnes M. Stops, Women’s Institute organiser, was in Mangonui on Wednesday, 30th September, and addressed a good gathering of women, including visitors from Oruru. A very interesting afternoon was spent, and a branch of the Institute was established in Mangonui. The officebearers appointed were : President— Mrs. McLea ; Vice-President—Mrs. J. Hughes ; Hon. Treasurer—Mrs. Brid-g-ens ; Hon. Secretary—Mrs. Parkinson. Mr. D. J. McKay kindly gave the use of his hall free for the occasion. The visitors were entertained to afternoon tea by the Mangonui ladies. Tennis Club Meeting At the annual meeting of the Mangonui Tennis Clu'b the following-office-bearers were elected : Patron—• Mr. W. A. Wilton ; President—Mr. H. C. Anderson; Vice-Presidents—Misses Black and B. Houston ; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer—Mr. C. Williams. The opening day for the season has been fixed for the 17th October. Annual Meeting Cricket Club The Mangonui Cricket Club’s annual meeting was held on Thursday evening, Ist October. Mr. R. T. Wrathall was appointed Hon. Secretary, and Messrs. W. A. Wrathall and W. Irving were appointed delegates to attend Association meetings. Bank Manager’s Transfer Mr. R/ W. Laing, who has been manager of the Bank of Australasia, Mangonui, for about five years, is to be transferred to Kaitaia branch, and his successor will be Mr. Mitchell, who is already wellknown in the district. Mr. Laing is to be accorded a presentation social and dance before his departure. Improvements at Hospital Mainly owing to the enthusiasm of the Medical Superintendent, Dr. J. Rule, considerable improvements have been made to the Mangonui Hospital buildings and grounds, including the erection of T.B. shelters. A New Business

An aerated water factory is shortly to be established in Mangonui, the proprietor being Mr. C. W. Harris. Increasing Butterfat Supplies Oruru-Fairburn Dairy Factory’s output is slightly behind the corresponding period of last year, but the supply is rapidly increasing, and it is anticipated that this season’s total will exceed last year’s. Wharf Repairs Needed There is some talk of repairs being effected to Mangonui wharf. Such are urgently required, as the structure has b|een for some time in a very dangerous condition. Benefit Concert and Dance A benefit concert and dance was held in Mangonui on Friday, 2nd October, proceeds in aid of the orphaned children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mita Renata. The function was organised and carried out by some of the Natives of the district, and their efforts were well rewarded. The following was the concert programme : Opening Chorus, “Welcome to All”; Song, “Mothers of Salem”; Soldiers Drilling and Marching ; Hawaiian Dance ; Carpenters’ Drill ; Hula Dance by Miss M. Henry ; FlagDrill ; Sailor’s Hornpipe ; Song, “California Nights”; Poi Selection ; Song, “Hallo Sarah”; Stepdance ; Maori Haka ; Hinemoa and Tutanekai Poi; Song, “The Violet”; Indian Love Song ; Fan Dance by the big girls; Tahitian Song; Willow Dance; Hula Danse by Miss S. Richards; Fan Dance by the small girls; Song, “Love at Home”; Song, “The Mellow Eve”; The Waka; Poi, leaving Hawaiki for New Zealand ; “God Save the King.” The various items were well received by i the large audience. Miss Ritete, who trained the children, is to be congratulated on the success achieved. Personal Mr. Allen Bell has been through the district, meeting his erstwhile constituents. Mr. and Mrs. D. J. McKay invited a few friends to an evening on Thursday, Ist October, to celebrate Mr. Albert Burgoyne’s 21st birthday. Inspector O’Hara, of the Police Department, visited Mangonui last weekend. Growth of Feed Pastures are responding to the genial warmth experienced during the past fortnight, and there is a noticeable growth of feed on most farms in the district,
