TAXES ON NECESSITIES

CRITICISM OF INCREASES PROTEST MADE BY FARMERS A resolution strongly protesting against increases upon necessities in the protective customs taxation was unanimously carried at a meeting of the Auckland provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union last evening. The executive was of the opinion that the new tariff would increase the burdens upon industry and create still more unemployment. In moving the resolution Mr. R. Feisst said that the Government of the day, in an effort to increase its revenue, had tapped all sources. The new customs tariff could only increase the cost of living. It was too late to make any variation this session, but the farmers could nevertheless make their opinions heard. Mr. A. McConaughy, who seconded the motion, said he thought the present policy of the Government was suicidal.

A protest was also made against using the increased petrol taxation for purposes other than easing the burdens upon agricultural lands. It was thought that such increases should be allocated to county councils for use on roads other than main highways.
