Obituary. Arthur G. C. Glass
The death of Arthur G C Glass founder of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, has occurred at the Auckland Hospital. Deceased was born at Somerset 69 years ago and came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Helen Denny at the age of 13. Eventually Mr Glass moved to Broadwood where he was a pioneer in breaking in the country. He undertook the organisation of the Farmers’ Union and it was at Kaitaia, in 1899, the first meeting of the union was held under the chairmanship of Mr T W P Smith. Subsequently Mr Glass travelled through both Islands, calling meetings of farmers, which resuted in the formation of branches of the union throughout the Dominion. Later Mr Glass purchased a farm near Mercer where he lived for about nine * years. For the last three years he had been living in retirement with a son at Whangamarino, in the Waikato. Recognition by the Farmers’ Union of the services of its foun- / der was expressed at meetings of the Auckland Executive last February when Mr presented with a gold watch. 1
