Tobacco Growing

Now that New Zealand may be included among tobacco-growing countries the condition of affairs in regard to Empire tobacco will have some interest for the Dominion. Rhodesian growers were getting on vety well until a year ago, but the great expansion of their production has led to bad times. The Empire Industries’ Association has taken the matter up and is trying to enconfage people to smoke Empire tobacco. In a letter to the London press Brigadier-General Sir Henry Page Croft, M.P., chairman of the executive committee writes Since preference was granted to Empire Tobacco there has been a remarkable increase in the production under the flag; the imports of unmanufactured tobacco from Empire countries having risen from 19,000,000 lb in 1925, to 41,000,000 lb in 1927. In the interests of Empire trade, I make an appeal to smokers to give at least a trial to Empire tobacco and insist that their tobacconist provide them with such brands. In this way we can do much to wipe off the stocks of Rhodesian tobacco now waiting sale.
