The Wireless Road
/\ Deferring Metalling Has It Any Significance Rumour of Closing Wireless Station The Post and Telegraph Department has asked the Mangonui Count? Council to defer the ; work of metalling the Wireless road. When this letter was read at the meeting of the Council on Friday last some of the members remarked that this application was somewhat unique. There may, however, be nothing unique about this particular application if any importance may be attached to certain rumours in circulation in the Kiitaia district. These are to the effect that in the near future the Awanui Wireless station is to be closed down and the staff transferred to a sphere of greater activity. This may or may not be the position but it is freely stated that officials attached to the Wireless station are of the opinion that the time is not far distant when they will be transferred to fresh fields and pastures new.
The application of the Department may have the significance that the Department desires this work delayed in order that by the time it is carried out it will be a charge upon the ratepayers only. Whether this will prove to be the case, time alone will show.
