The Tariff Proposals.

And Farmers' Union

Colonel Bell's Communication Thrust And Counter Thrust.

The following telegrams are a continuation of a series which have already appeared in our columns:

To the Secretary, Bay of Islands Farmers Union, Kawakawa.

“Have received yours of the Bth. In response to my wire of Sept. 19th, your president promised to let me know the executive’s opinion on the Tariff Bill, after the Kaeo Contetence. This, no coming to hand was the reason of my wires of the 4th and 6th of October. As I had nqt received a single objection from your executive or any branch union in my electorate, neither as far as 1 can gather has any member of parliament or minister of customs. In response to representations of the Hikurangi Dairy Co; I have said, advantagepus alterations have been made to the Tariff on dairy machinery. My views regarding the Tariff quest on have been "made bublic on tie platform', and in my speech in Parliament, three months ago, and I do not in any way desire assistance you suggest. All the assistance I require is to know if any items of Tariff Bill your executive wish objected to as Bill will probably be finally disposed of to-morrow night. Any public' body putting forward views contrary to my statement Parliament has done so without authority. Kindly wire me the name of the body referred to in order that I may investigate. Regret no Legislative or other authority to allow this telegram or its reply to be conveyed free.” Allen Bell. To Allen Bell, House of Representatives Wellington. “Your wire of the»tenth just to hand. If you and other members of your Party are unaware of representations made on Protective Tariff, or if any representations are necessary you must be more completely out of touch with farming opinion than even we imagined. The Union is not able to contribute to Party funds so it is contemplating making further representations at the General Election. Your anxiety is understood and sympathised with. Your telegrams marked MG. A. What does this mean ?”
