WAIHARARA.
Mr. Sweeney spok® her: on the 22: ! irrt,, ami to such purpose j that those \vh - me* in : ikewarm ' indifference wei- .u 'd in the end to change the cuu. ent onal 1 vote ot thanks into one of cordial : appreciation ot the most able anil instructive speech yet delivered at i Waiharara. Some triumph for ] the farmers’hope! It is well to , discriminate between a nurely I sounding speech like Mr. Horn- 1 blow’s; a merely re-sounding; ; speech like Mr. Bell’s; and a really sound speech like Mr. ! Sweeney’s. The last is a pure j j appeal to reason and justice ; the ' j other two may appeal to passion, j ; prejudice, the sense of fuu, .the sense of fiction, the sense of j j melody or no sense at all. Mr. ; Sweeney has an unassuming 1 manner, a thoroughly masculine voice, and, since his every phrase will be found to contain an intelligible idea clothed in the words best suited to it, he must be described as a good speaker in the best sense of the word. INo stage-play, platform ricks, flourishes, flim-flams or efforts to deceive. No vain repetitions like | the Bible heathen at his prayers, ■ or the politician at his platitudes. . Let us liken the offerings of each
to a corn-sheaf. In Mr. Hornblow’s you will fricl no grain at all; in Mr. Bell’s, only a grain here and there ; in Mr. Sweeney’s, a grain in every ear. The best proof of this would be a verbatim report of all three. Surely Mr. liornblow would be astonished at the utter emptiness of his! I understand somebody “shook” the grain out of his sheaf up at Houhora. Taut pis pour liu ! The Bay farmers are to be congratulated on their choice. They have
also provided a reliable lepository lor the votes of the anii-Bell Reformist, the anti-Holland Worker, those orphan waifs and strays of Liberalism who do not fancy either Mr. Wrathall or Mr. Hornblow as a stepfather and of every returned soldier into whose soul the iron has entered. All these may vote for Mr. Sweeney in the assurance he will n ;t disappoint them. Black Watch.
