Messrs A. J. Northwood, W. Farrimond and G. P. Burton arrived back from Auckland on Tuesday night. Last Thursday Sir James Parr transmitted to the Prime Minister inquiries from a number of Auckland friends on the subject of his health, together with good wi lies and the hope that he is rapidly regaining his old vigour. The Minister has received the following reply from Mr. Massey :—“Many thanks for your telegram I very much appreciate the very kind message from my Aucklrnd friends, and am glad to he able to say that I feel well round the corner now, and look forward to being at my accustomed post when the next session commences.”

Miss Mary M. Hickey, M.A., of the Mission Convent, Christchurch, has (says a Christchurch paper) attained the distinction of having conferred upon her the degree of Doctor of Literature |Litt. D.j, the first woman in New Zealand, and one of the lew, if any, in Australia to attain that honour. Miss Hickey, a student of Canterbury College, gained her B. A. degree some years ago, and the following year, studving under Dr Hight, himself a Doctor of Literature, she gained her M.A. degree with first class honours in history. Since then she has been engaged in historical research, and the degree of Doctor of Literature, which brings honour to herself and her University, was conferred on her lor a thesis embodying the results of historical research. Miss Hickey leaves for London and the Continent in May to pursue her studies. She is a sister of Mr. T. S. Hickey, Kaitaia. The Right Rev. Dr Averill, accompanied by Ven Archdeacon Hawkins and the Rev Panapa, reached Kaitaia yesterday. His Lordship will visit Te Kao to-day for the purpose of administering Confirmation and alter that will remain in Kaitaia until Monday next presiding at the centenary celebrations on Saturday and administering Confirmation on Sunday. Mr. W.T. Williams, of Hawkes Bay, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Athol Williams,- Mrs. Trimneli and Miss Blyth were in Kaitaia on Monday. They took morning tea with Mrs. E C. Matthews, journeyed to the Ninety-mile beach [Scott’s Point] for lunch, and returned to Mr. C.I. Pnckev’s in the afternoon, eventually returning to Mangonui via Lake Ohia.
