MEETING OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held in the Library on Monday evening. Mr. Grigg (President) was in the chair, and there were present also: Messrs. Perkins, (Secretary) Lewis, T. S. Houston, Wig'ey, F. B. Rowe, F. Banks, F. li. S. Matt tews, C, B. Michie, Watson, A. W. Masters, W. Rose, R. A. Johnston, Campbell, Pollock, L. H. Bell. Mr. Lewis stated that as requested he had made enquiries re the question of Maori pensions, and was satisfied that all those receiving pensions were entitled to them.

A discussion took place on the mail question. General dissatisfaction was expressed with the present mail service, and Mr. Grigg said an attempt should be made to have re-instated the outward mail closing on Friday night. Mr. Houston pointed out the unsatisfactory position of the mail to Ahipara, winch reaches there on Friday, anti closes again without giving an opportunity of reply, thus necessitating a delay of over a week. If the mailman were made to wait about two hours or so before returning an opportunity would be afforded to answer at least urgent correspondence. Hopes were expressed that so soon as the railway was running to Okaihau a triweekly mail might be received over the Mangamuka Road. It was resolved that Mr. T. S. Houston, on his visit to Auckland should interview the Chief Postmaster and place the Chamber’s views before him.

A discussion on the Harbour Question, reported elsewhere, then took place. A meeting of the Chamber is to he held in January to go into Hie question of what steps, if any, should be taken to form a Harbour Board. It was resolved to endorse the action of the County Council in applying for the Mangrove mud flats. The matter of improving County matters by cutting out the riding system was discussed, as reported elsewhere in this issue, and debited at some length, and will come before a general meeting as soon as possible.

A hearty vote ot thanks was accorded Mr. C. B. Michie and Mr. W. Rose for their services in connection with the Harbour Question.
