DISTRICT DEVELOPMENT.
(To the Editor). Sir,—ln your issue of Nov 3rd you publish a letter from Mr Vernon Reed, M.P., in which he states his opinion that the Age is being conducted on good lines, is a credit to the Countv and that his ambition has been to see the paper run o'n lines to the advancement of the district by advocating a sound, sane policy of progress. At the last meeting of the Mangonui County Council a most important deputation went from Herekinotoput before the Council, schemes which are of the most vital importance to us, and which would lead to the advancement of our neglected district. Yet as far as you were concerned ,the deputation and the important discussion which afterwards took place in Council were practically ignored. When Colonel Bell was Editor the Age was run in highly progressive lines, and he gave special prominence to all movements affecting the development of all the outside districts, but I am sorry to see that this is not the case today. I am, etc. A HEREKINO SETTLER. Bth Nov 1921.
[Our correspondent, in his anxiety to have a smack at the Age, does not pay much attention to his facts. In the Age of Oct 6th the whole of the resolutions passed by the meeting of Herekino ratepayers were printed in extenso. On October 20th we printed the proceedings
of the Council meeting, including all resolutions dealing with matters put before the Council by the deputation from Herekino. What more does pur correspondent want? We have published all that lias been put before us in connection with the Herekino-W hangape development schemes. That we did not report the deputation was due to a mis-understanding. Our correspondent will remember that the deputation was to meet the Council at 2p.m, but at the urgent request of the members the meeting with the Council took place earlier. We were not notified of the change. So far as the schemes for the development of Herekino and Whangape are concerned they have our heartiest support. But there is very littie prospect of fruition from some of them for some time to come, as applications for grants are not very likely to be considered at this late hour. Knowing the source from which the abovefletter emanates we look upon it as an attempt to belittle the Age,laud “Colonel” Bell, and get in an oblique attack on some one else. Verb. sap. Editor Age.]
