Kauri Gum Trade.
Objectionable Practices
Alleged. Gum buyers and exporters are complaining of the quality of the article at present coming on to the Auckland market, and the other morning an exhibit was received by the Chamber of Commerce, which was stated to be a sample of tbe “gum chips ” coming forward. Ninety-five der oent. of this exhibit was certainly plain Mother Earth. The firm, in forwarding the specimen to the president of the Chamber, wrote: “We send you herewith two samples of kauri gum and chips and dust, sent to Auokland for stile. You will probably havo some difficulty in finding the gum, and it will indeed be interesting to ascertain the actual percentage of gum in these samples. This stuff is being largely exported to the Continent as New Zealand kauri gum, but, of oourse, it is mixed in with something better, or, in plain English, the better goods are adulterated with this sample of ‘God’s Own Country,’ and the praotioe will eventually do grave damage to the kauri gum trade. It is, of course, impossible to seoure united action against the system, which has been growing for some time, as several of the exporters are engaged in this wholly objeotienable praotice.”
