WAIPAPAKAURI.
(From our Own Correspondent.) Vf o are having some nice mid-winter weather and the roads are very dirty, not to say muddy, boggy, filthy and impossibly bad for traffic. The gumdiggers who arc engaged on the big drain are getting on. They are well in with the big tunnel which will be timbered throughout with heart of kauri aud floored and sided with twelve by ones. This drain should give the men engaged about five years of good digging and it will cost about £2O a man to put it through, counting the men’s time at eight shillings per day, plus the cost of timber, carting, freight, etc. It will be quite impossible for any gumdigger to make a living this winter unless he drains swamp land, and as this can only be done by a syndicate of diggers the “ hatter ” is likely to ho driven out of existence, I notice that our old friend Mr. Purdie is seeking election to the Education Board. I like his chance and would like to see my ojd sphool-fellow returned.
