BEFORE THE MAGISTRATE.
In a certain country town the chief magistrate of the borough is a pawnbroker by trade, and an amusing incident occurred recently when he and several brother magistrates were adjudicating on a case of disorder aqd drunkenness.
After hearing t*he evidence his worship decided on 15s. fine or seven days, and on the prisoner hping told his sentence, he exclaimed : "It’s too much," and asked to have it modified.
This was refused, The Mayor saying if he didn't like paying he could do seven days. Whereupon the facetious delinquent pleaded he hadn’t so much on him, but, turning to his pall in the body of the court, he said : "Here, Jim, just take this Svatch '(handing over his own timekeeper) down to old Smith’s (the mayorpawnbroker’s) and bring me a quid on it."
This was done, and the fine paid, amidst the uproarious laughter of those assembled in court.
