Upkeep of Hospitals.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—A number of ratepayers are de- , sirouß of knowing what section or sections . of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act makes it compulsory for Boards to pay the upkeep of hospitals, and would be thankful if you would be pleased to give the information. I was personally requested to look over the Act. I have done so, but can’t find it. Section 30 appears to be the only one having a direct bearing on it, and that is onlypennissive—notcompulsory. Section 290 of the Counties Act of the following years gives the Council similar additional power, so that each would seem to be similarly responsible. Section 60 of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act saves the Board from paying anything considered excessive, which I presume would devolve on some county, vide *290 as above.—Your most obedient servant KAITAIA. June 30, 1906. [This looks very much like re-opening a discoafcn pseriouely vetoed by us, but as it is a j^ f sa of the question of which we had no oofmwnoe, we publish the letter. As we have never stated that it is compulsory for Boards to pay Uiw upkeep of hospitals, we prefer to leave the rtmly to those correspondents who are responsible for the assertion.—Ed.]
