Peria.

(From our own Correspondent.) I am led to believe that there is a like-] lihood of a Debating Society being fonnedj in our midst, and a public meeting is toj be called for Saturday evening next. If] suitable subjects are chosen for debate, a] Debating Society cannot fail to become! attractive and evenings should be wellj and profitably spent. It is to be hoped! that a good muster will attend the meet-j ing, and that our lady friends will make] it a point to be present. It may bii possible at the first me ting to do a good] deal in the matter of getting a syllabus! drawn out, and any ladies or gentlemen! who propose helping in the formation of a Society might think out some subjects] which would perhaps form interesting] matter for debate.

The promoters of the Native School! concert were, I am sure, well pleased! with the bumper house last Frida)’ evening. Special thanks are due to Mrs. Hazard for her goodness in providing a repast for the children after the concert, and also to Mr. Hazard for the free use of the hall and piano. Mr. Wilton, of Mangonui, deserves hearty thanks for his services as accompanist. He made a special trip a week or so back in order to help at a rehearsal. I notice the sportsman is still keen after] the wily pheasant, but] I am told this! much-sought-after bird is not so plentiful] this year. I noticed a good number] about before the Ist of May, but lately ij have not seen any ; perhaps our feathery] friend has migrated. The Rev. W. Scott has paid his usual] monthly visit, and preached to a fairly! large congregation on Sunday afternoon! in the Oruru School.
