A Towai Function.

(From a Correspondent). A concert and dance in aid of the Hall Erection Fund was held in Mr. McMaster’s Hall, Towai, on Friday, the 17th insfc. A number of ladies and gentlemen from Kawakawa drove out to assist in the performance, and were very cordially received by all those in charge of the arrangements. The hall, which was very prettily decorated, reflected great credit on the Towai people. The attendance was very largo, the hall being crowded in every part, and everybody appeared to thoroughly appreciate the various items on the programme. That there is talent of undoubted merit in both Towai and Kawakawa was clearly demonstrated, and some of those who sang would, with a little careful training, be able to give a good account of themselves in some of the bigger towns. The singing of Mr. H. Kirkpatrick, of Kawakawa, was highly appreciated, and he received an encore for each of his songs. The Towai Minstrels, composed of children, gave a very creditable performance. Altogether a very enjoyable evening was spent, and the unanimous verdict was that everybody acquitted themselves to the entire satisfaction of the audience. The Kawakawa folk appreciated their kind reception, and at the close were thanked for their assistance. Mrs. Rawlings, of Tawai, accompanied the Towai performers, aitd Mrs. Kirkpatrick, of Kawakawa, those from Kawakawa. The following were the items rendered: — Overture on the pianoforte, “ Hiawatha,” Mrs. Kirkpatrick; song-, “Little Alabama Coon,” Towai Minstrels; song, “ Sentenced to Death,” Mrs. T. Halliday; song, “The Deathless Army,” Mr. Long; song, “ Blue Bell,” Mrs. Atkins; song, “Everybody Loves Somebody,” Miss Fleet; song, “ Simon the Cellarer,” Mr. Kirkpatrick, and for an encore he gave “Father O’Flynn; song, “Thine Love Ever,” Miss McKonzie. After an interval of ten minutes the Towai Minstrels sang “ Tho Swanee Kiver,” and for an encore sang “ The Little AUabama Coon ;” song, “ Island of Dreams,” Miss McKenzie; song, “Off to Philadelphia,’ Mr. Kirkpatrick, and as an encore “ The Gladiator;” song, “ Female Auctioneer,” Miss Fleet; song, “ Asleep in the Deep,” Mr. Long; song, “ I’ve Got my Eye on You,” Mrs. Afldn, who as an encore gave “ Ring Down the Curtain ;” song, “ Rocked in the Cradle,” Mrs. Halliday. A supper and dance brought to a close one of the most successful gatherings ever held in Towai.
