ME. T. WAKE AT KOHUKOHU. KOHUKOHU, To-day. The largest and most enthusiastic political meeting ever held in Hokiauga eventuated on Saturday night, between 250 and 300 electors being present. ThS meeting was a most orderly one, and the Independent’s majority in this district is „ assured. AUCKLAND, November 25. The trial of Andrew Campbell, the Rotorua boarding-house keeper-, has 0 been concluded at the Supreme Court. The Judge, in summing up, said he believed the man was acting under * provocation sufficient to put any decent man off his balance. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter, with a strong recommendation to mercy. Tho Judge in sentencing said he felt justified in imposing the light sentence of imprisonment for twenty-four hours beginning with the present sessions. The term having expired accused was discharged from custody. AUCKLAND, November 27. Shortly before eleven o’clock last night a fire occurred at “ Lynnholm,” Nurse Green’s private hospital, CrummerEoad, Ponsonby. The alarm was given, and immediate efforts were made to get the inmates out of the building, in whiolf there were 8 patients, many in a very weak condition. Several heroic rescues were affected, a conspicuous one being made by a young man, a son of Mr. F. Dye, Northern Wairoa, who was himself ' in the hospital with a slight affcctiotf He saved a child. Young Deeble, employed at Smith and Caughey’s, braya'-' entered the blazing room and * sleeping child. The fire brigade iW quickly on the scene. The firemen searched the rooms for one patient, Mrs. 0' Higgins, who, it was believed at the time W had been saved, but on inquiries made could not bo found at the houses of any of the neighbours. Nurse Green, owner of the hospital, went into the burning building to see whether this helpless patient was removed, herself being severely burnt in her efforts on behalf of the patients. It was not till the fire was finally conquered that the truth was learnt. Drs. Purchas, Keith, Knight, Robertson, and Inglis, by a systematic * search of the houses round about failed to find Mrs, Higgins, and later the charred building was searched, and the j remains of the poor woman discovered in bed, never having stirred an inch. Dr. Keith viewed the body, and came to the conclusion that she had died painlessly. She was the wife of Mr. Arthur Higgins, hotelkeeper, Maropin, Northern Wairoa,’ J and leaves two children. The origin of * the fire is in doubt. It is believed the kerosene heating stove exploded, causing ignition of the wood. Tlie Agricultural Show was favoured with beautiful weather, and proved fa unqualified success. All parts of Auckland province were represented, and it is 1 estimated there was a record attendance, The tram traffic was phenomenally h avy. JKk.
