Kaitaia.
(From a Correspondent)
The interest in county matters has subsided, and tho interest in political matters is intensified. The event of tho week has been Mr. Wake’s meeting and candidature. Mr. Johnson’s recent meeting was an example of the glamour produced by a finely-prepared speech well delivered; lapse of a little time has greatly weakened its effect, and in consequence the more solid merits of Mr. Wake are very generally being recognised. By all sides it is freely admitted the Independent Oppositionist will poll heavily everywhere, including this district. The most ardent of Mr. Johnson’s supporters, who formerly sneered, now freely admit Mr. Wake’s strength. Mr. Houston’s candidature seems forgotten by all free and independents. The committee meeting of the Kaitaia Branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on November 18th, when a large amount of business wm dealt with. Written answers to the six questions submitted by this branch to candidates, were read from Messrs. Johnson and Wake, both replies being highly satisfactory. Mr. Houston’s answers are expected shortly. After consideration of correspondence
from the Herekino and Okaewai branches regarding political action, it was decided to take no action, this election being so near. A promenade concert has been arranged to be held in tho Agricultural Hall on Now Year’s Night under the auspices of the Farmers’ Union. Probably a small charge will be made, the money to go toward the organising fund. As the roads are again passable it was decided to call a general meeting of the branch for Saturday, December 9th.
