THE AUSTEALIAN TELEGEAPH.
The construction of the telegraph from Adelaide to Port Darwin, in north-west Australia, which was expected to be completed before the end of the year, has been temporarily suspended, by the contractors who had undertaken the construction of 400 miles of the northern portion of the line throwing up their contract. The Government of South Australia has lost no time however in taking the work into its own hands, and has chartered a steamer and sent off to Port Darwin a strong working pai fey with the necessary material, so that it is expected the line may yet be completed by the end of January. It is believed a cable from Java will be lauded
at Port Darwin before the end of the year, go that in February next at the latest, it is probable Australia will be in telegraphic communication with Europe.
