Journals become more necessary as men become more equal and individualism more to be feared. It would be to underrate their importance to suppose that they serve only to secure liberty ; they maintain civilization. Db Tooquevillb, Of Democracy in America, vol. 5, 230.
"We have news from the East Coast byway of Auckland which speaks of an intended attack on the rebels, to be made by Colonel "Whitinore on the 6th instant. This we suppose to have been the attack we received some particulars of by telegraph from Wellington on the 11th, and which appeared in our cqlumns on the 12th. In following up the enemy our troops had run short of provisions, and had to substitute horse-flesh for beef — a circumstance that nearly befel General Chute's forces in their march round the back of Cape Egmont.
"Want of space compels the omission of last night's proceedings in Council, our editorial article, and other local matter.
