THE ESTIMATES.

liho 'Nelson Examiner, Hay I.] AYe print to-day the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure of the province for the ensuing year, as submitted to the Couucil by tho Superintendent on Wednesday last. The revenue is estimated at £100.-il6, the expenditure at £95,949. The saving in salaries and contingencies on the Estimates of last year is £12,529. The savings are principally elfeeted in what were the land aud public works departments, and iv police charges. The following table, which gives the present Estimates side by side with the votes of last year, will show where the priming-knife has been applied : —

Eears were entertained that the exigencies of the province would render a serious curtailment of the Education vote necessary, but such has not proved the case ; nor have the amounts voted to Road Boards, Libraries, and other objects of public utility been interfered with. The sum set down for Public Works in the settled districts of the province is £12,890, for Public "Works on the West Coast £29,100. The Estimates are calculated to give satisfaction throughout the province, and credit is due to the Government for the desire it has shewn to curtail expenses where practicable, and to devote as much, as possible of the revenue to reproductive works.
