NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.
Tutjrsdat, ArRiL 28. Present : Mr. AYebb, in the chair ; Messrs. Bentlcy, Graham, Sait, Everett, Burn, and Ailkcn. The minutes of the j>revious meeting were read and confirmed. In reference to Halifax-street footpath, a letter was received from Mr. Harlcy, asking for permission to remove some soil from that street, and to cart an equivalent quantity of gravel to any place in the neighbourhood, as the Board may direct. A discussion ensued. On the motion of Mr. Burn, seconded by Mr. Sait, it was resolved, " That Mr. Harley be allowed to remove the soil, for a width of twenty feet from the centre of Halifax-street, on condition that he make the road good with gravel to the satisfaction of the Overseer." The proposed by-law respecting gorse hedges was agnin taken into consideration. On the motion of Mr. Burn, seconded by Mr. Everett, it was resolved, " That the by-law be adopted ; and that it be advertised in the newspapers, and forwarded to his Honour the Superintendent for his approval, as by law provided." A letter was received from Sir. D. Moore, who declined to accede to the proposal of the Board, with respect to making up the road in Trafalgar-square, but expressed his willingness to perform the work himself, on condition that the Board would contribute one-half the amount he had already paid in rates on his property, and remit the current rate now due. After some discussion, it was resolved that Mr. Moore be informed that the Board had decided to adhere to their previous resolution, but have instructed the Overseer to cut down the bank, so as to give Mr. Moore an approach to his premises from Trafalgar-street. It was reported that Gardiner had not quite completed his contract in Nile-street, in consequence of his men having left him, and it was resolved that he be allowed a fortnight's extension of time. A letter was received from the labourers in the employ of the Board, calling attention to the general advance in wages, and asking for a similar advance. After some discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Everett, seconded by Mr. Graham, that the wages be raised to eight shillings a-day. The Chairman reported that, at tho request of the Government, and as no other men could be readily obtained, the men in the employ of the Board had, accompanied by their Overseer, cleared the road across tho Maungatapu of fallen trees, so as to keep the track open. This was approved of by the Board. Mr. Sait reported that Mr. Rothwell had been filling the holes, and otherwise improving the road, in Weka-street, and suggested that the Board should consider whether or not he was entitled to some recompense for his work. It was resolved that the Overseer should examine the street, and report as to what extent Mr. Rothwell had benefited the road. The Board then adjourned.
