Early application isnecasiary. Bridge Btreet, August 6, 1853. D. Moobs. rrr\or rr\o E. STAFFORD, Esquire. Sir — Ia the Nelson Examiner, of date July 27, there is a letter addressed to me, 'apparently put in as part of the correspondence, which letter I never received, much less sent to the paper ; and when I first saw it, resolved to treat it with silent contempt, as I looked on it as a mere political squib — but on asking Mr. Kearns why he did not send me a copy, he stated that he never addressed such a letter to me on the subject. He at the same time admitted that he did invite me au4 others to a meeting at the Plough Inn, oh Sunday, and also admitted that he and Dr. Muller did meet there at the time, and simply denied it was a preliminary political meeting, but as he was employed by Mr. Elliott to canvass for you, I leave you and the public to judge from my statement (which I am prepared to prove), whether it was a political or a religious meeting. I on various occasions expressed my intention of exposing such proceedings, but never stated you were there. I have seen for a few minutes only the Rev. Mr. Ironside, who assures me he never used it for a political purpose, but talked to Mr. Elliott on the subject with a view to put a stop to Sunday political meetings. Such being the case, I am sorry I ever put such a construction on it, and have stated my willingness to meet that gentleman, in order to come to a' mutual explanation, as I fear he has been either misrepresented or misled. I shall hand a copy of this to the Nelson Examiner* for publication. I have the honour to be, Your obedient servant, Alexander O£g. Hope, Waimea East, August 4.
