In reply, I beg to state that it was not my intention to have accepted the honor you are desirous of conferring upon me, as I felt that a more [eligible person could have been selected— besides, the necessary duties would in some degree interfere with my personal pursuits : but when I see the request coming from so numerous and respectable a body of my fellow settlers I cannot but feel it my duty to accede to your wishes. With the full intention of doing everything in my power to promote the interests of this important agricultural district should I be returnedt and thanking you sincerely for the opinion you are pleased to express in my favour, I am, gentlemen, Your obedient servant. Sja— We, the undersigned, residents or interested in the Wairau DUtrict, request you to come forward as a Candidate for our Representation in the Provincial Council about to be established in accordance with the New Constitution. From your long residence in the colony, dating from its earliest times, from your interest in this particular district as a stockholder, and from your known political principles, we do not hesitate to say we believe you eminently fitted to be one of our Members in that Council which will have the government of matters more particularly local, and from which must emanate those measures which shall not only refer to the mere individual interest of the stockholder, but give the Wairau that importance which it ought deservedly to hold, and which can only be obtained by our Representatives having a knowledge ef its more remote parts, and feeling the necessity of taking those steps which shall remove their isolation as soon as possible, thereby bringing the whole District into as speedy and easy communication with the capital, Nelson, as the nature of the country will allow, and thus enabling us more fully to participate in the advantages of self-government. Feeling convinced that you will always steadily and unhesitatingly advocate our interests, local and political, while regarding the interests of the Province generally, we beg to assure you of our utmost support in the event of your returning a favourable answer to our request.
