WESTLAND TIMBER WORKERS
QUESTION OF “WET TIME” PAYMENT Auckland, Sept , 10. A statement that he could not understand the Westland Timber Workers’ Union's decision to stop work unless “wet time” payment were granted immediately was made to-day by the Acting Minister of Labour. Mr O’Brien. The Minister said he met the men’s representatives and those of the employers when the men stopped work three weeks ago. it being agreed that representatives of the Union and sawmillers would meet to discuss the question of wet-time payment. This meeting took place on 30th August, when it was pointed out that other sawmill workers in New Zealand were interested. Delegates unanimously agreed to postpone the meeting until 24th Seplembpr. The Minister said that there were still 14 days to go to the date agreed upon. If it were a matter of having an earlier meeting he would endeavour to arrange one to meet as early as possible In the meantime he earnestly requested the men to return to work and he would do his best to have any'wet time increase agreed upon made retrospective. —P.A.
