WADE’S FIRST DEFEAT
AUSTRALIAN CHESS TOURNEY Sydney, Sept. 10. The New South Wales champion, Lajos Steiner, has taken the lead after the sixth round of the Australian chess championship. The New Zealand champion, R. G. Wade, and M. E. Goldstein agreed to a draw in their adjourned game from the fifth round. This left Wade the only undefeated flayer in the tourna- , ment, but in the sixth round he was defeated by H. Klass, New South Wales. Wade played for a win, but Klass was in top form. He sacrificed a pawn in the opening and obtained a menacing position -with his rooks. Wade did not realise his danger in' time and was gradually forced in a mating net. C. J. S. Purdy and the titleholder. G. Koshnitskv. played a drawn game. Leading after the sixth round were Steiner, 5: Purdy, 4|; S. Lazare, 4i; Wade. 4; C. G. Watson, 3|: Koshnitsky. 31; Goldstein, 3£.
