STRIKES AND RIOTOUS DISORDERS
TT . London. August 6. High prices and hardships have caused an onclh ss succession of strikes :u;d riotous disorders in Jtaly. The harvest has suffered from drought, the feed position is difficult and the people are reacting explosively. I n one case a crowd, f ome armed, seized a ship. The Government’s quandary is constantly increasing by the arrival daily from Germany o thousands of returned de portees needing iciief and assistance. At Naples depot lees demonstrated because little is being done for them. Transport shortage is another cause of iivi.ation. Five hundred peo pie. some armed, took possession of the only steamer connecting Sardinia and the mainland The captain refused to sail because ihe ship was licensed ,o carry only 2CO passengers. The steamer was tie.i up foi two days until the Government provided two destroyer to carry the surplus passengers. Large stocks of textiles and boots found in northern Italy are being mar- ' keted in areas where they are needed. : with the particular object of coaxing out food hoarded by farmers.
‘The Times” correspondent in Koirt says it is ioo early to say whether the Government relief measures will ma«te life more tolerable.
