INVESTIGATION OF RUAPEHU

NEW FISSURE ON EAST FLANK Wellington, This Day. Mr Ongley. Director of Geological Survey, s ated that two field geologists, Messrs H. F. Fyfe and A. Beck, were leaving to-day for Mt. Ruapehu where they would spend a month in investigation. Instruments to record sound, magnetic and shake effects, specially designed for them, were now being made. Mr Ongley said r the latest photographs showed a new fissure on the east flank of Mt. Ruapehu above the head of Wangaehu. This indicates that if there is a flow of lava it will flow eastward into an area where it cannot do any harm. The lava would get through the crater in a slight flow and relieve the pressure inside" the crater. % That was the normal expectation. There was nothing sensational or alarming about it. —P.A.
