“PLUM” OF BANKING WORLD
POST FOB NEW ZEALANDER London, Aug. 3. Mr J. H. Lawrie, manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, who recently visited the Dominion, has been appointed General Manager of the Industrial and Commercial Finance corporation. This corporation has been lormed by bankers with a capital of £45.000.000 to lend anything between £SOOO and £200,000 to restore and increase Britain’s internal and external trade. Mr Lawrie’s job is of first importance in Britain’s programme of reponstructing private enterprise, with a salary probably not* less than £IO,OOO. Mr Lawrie was at Fettes, Edinburgh, before going up to the University College at Oxford, which he left with the status of B.A. With that equipment and no influence but his own energy and brains he has landed one of the biggest “plums" of the banking world. Mr Lawrie said: “We are prepared to lend anything between £SOOO and £200,000 but whereas a banker tends to base his loans to a large extent on current business or on early prospects of return, we have a broader view. Our emphasis will be on getting a business started.” , The Directors of the National Bank of New Zealand met on 9th September to appoint Mr Lawrie's successor.—P.A Special Correspondent.
