NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF CANADA
APPOINTMENT CAME AT HAPPY TIME COMMENT BY FIELD-MARSHAL ALEXANDER Caserta, Aug. 3. Although Field-Marshal Sir Harold Alexander would not normally retire until 60, he told the Associated Press of Great Britain that his appointment as Governor-General of Canada “comes at a happy time for me. I do not flatter myself as a statesman or a diplomat but I do not think that makes much difference if I bring to the post a high sense of responsibility, lam determined to have constructive ideas and make myself useful.”
Field-Marshal Alexander, recalling his campaigns said the battle of Tunis was his most exhilarating experience. Next came Rome, then last the great victory in the north. Field-Marshal Alexander hands over to his successor in September, but does not expect to go to Canada for several months.
