76 SORTIES FLOWN

N.Z. CORSAIRS IN SOLOMONS (R.N.Z.A.F. Official News Service) Bougainville, June 7. Seventy-six sorties were flown by New Zealand Corsairs yesterday against strong Japanese pockets which' are contesting the advance by Australian infantry and tanks in south Bougainville. Australians, fighting every inch of the way, made a gain of 1100 yards against the stiftest opposition for a fortnight. Fighting is taking place in a rough triangle formed by the Peperu and Hari Rivers and the Buin road. Tanks blasted a way across Peperu Ford, the first obstacle to the advance and by nightfall the troops had pushed on to within 200 yards of Hari River, where they are facing strong enemy defensive positions. This area was bombed by Corsairs again to-day.
