ENTERTAINED BY MOTHERS’ UNION
ADDRESS BY LADY NEWALL Honoured by a visit from Her Excellency, Lady Newall, Mothers’ Union members of the city and surrounding parishes filled the Marsden Library on Friday evening. Mrs P. B. Haggitt (chairman), and Mesdames T. J. Smith and O. J. Kimberley (vice-presidents), welcomed Her Excellency and expressed the great pleasure it gave members to entertain the patroness of the union. A telegram of greeting and an apology for her unavoidable absence was received from Mrs P. W. Stephenson. Mrs Strachan presented a bouquet to Lady Newall. Her Excellency gave a most interesting talk, in which she emphasised the ideals and obligations Of Christian womanhood, and stressed the fact that in the building of truly happy marriages and homes the qualities of patience, understanding, moderation and tact were essential. Her Excellency thought the value Of the finer things of life — art, music, drama—could not be measured, and they were a helpful and indeed necessary adjunct to those of the spirit—love, joy and faith. “Each human soul, with its unique experience of life, weaves a thread in the Divine pattern and if a better world is to be constructed these threads must interweave,” she said. Mrs J. Corder, a country member of the Executive Council, thanked Lady Newall for her helpful address and also, for including the visit in her programme. Members of the Diocesan Council were presented to Her Excellency and musical items contributed by Mrs Noble. Before leaving Her Excellency expressed her thanks to all concerned in the arrangements for the evening and her appreciation of the artistic decorations.
