trooper g. f. McDowell The death in action of Tpr. Gordon Frank (“Sandy”) McDowell, has been reported. He was the son of Mr and Mrs F. M. McDowell, of Hope, and was v.ell-known in Nelson as a Rugby footballer. Tpr. McDowell, who was 23 years ol age. was educated at the Hope School and Nelson College and was later farming on his own account at Hope. He was a member of the Nelson College First XV in 1937 and 1938 and afterwards captained the Pirates Rugby Club team and represented Nelson for two seasons. Early in the war he joined the Ist Battalion Nelson. Marlborough and West Coast Regt., transferring to the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in 1942. On arrival in Egypt he was posted to the Long Range Desert Group and after seeing service with this unit was transferred to the Divisional Cavalry. He was killed in action in Italy on 3rd August, 1944.
