25 YEARS ON HARBOUR BOARD

MR A. GOULD’S TERM OF OFFICE Last night’s meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board completed a term of 25 years’ membership, including 13 as chairman, l:y Mr A. Gould, the present chairman. At the conclusion of business Mr Gould said that with this meeting he had finished his first 25 years’ service with the Harbour Board. He proposed to offer himself again for election. Those 25 years had been filled with all sorts of experiences, some happy, some sad. The last 10 or 12 years had been very strenuous ones and he was grateful to the members for the help they had given him. He had held the position of chairman for the last 13 years and it had been a great privilege to hold the position because he had had a fine body of men to work with. He ’thought the board had been one of the happiest and most conscientious in Nelson, and its first consideration had always been the ratepayers. The board had carried out many important works and he did not believe anyone could point to any serious mistake the board had made. Whether the members came back on the board or not—and he hoped they would stand—he wished them success. He also referred to the staff and the watersiders who had been loyal to the board through all its difficulties. Musical honours were accorded the chairman, and Mr A. R. Kingsford. on behalf of the members expressed good wishes to the chairman and appreciation of his chairmanship, for he had always given members a fair innings; Mr Kingsford said he hoped the chairman would be elected again, and was positive he would be.
