MONTHLY MEETING HELD motdkka school The monthly mooting of the Nelson Education Board held yesterday was attended by Ihe Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (chairman), Messrs F. H. Newman, ,1. C. Wiikens, A. Two tenders were received lor remodelling the brick building at Motuand tm Assembly Hall were read, and it was decided to ask th c Minister of Education for authority to accept the lowest tender, that of Mr P. B. Calder, for A; 1347 4s. Jt was decided not to proceed with a suggestion for thc removal of the manual training building at Motueka. The chairman explained that the pro, posal had been carefully considered bv the board and it was now c:nsidered that the expenditure would not be justified. The tender of Mr D. Kelly for the remodelling of the Motueka dental clinic was accepted. The Education Department advised a grant to cover the cost of a small addition to the Motupipi residence and Mr Chapman’s tender was accepted. NEW MURCHISON D. 11.5. The board approved thc plans for the proposed new District High School at Murchison. The new I building will comprise five rooms—three primary and two secondary, and a manual training centre. It was decided to make application to the department lor a grant to cover the cost of erecting an additional classroom, owing to the increased roll number, at Reefton. The proposal for additional classroom accommodation at Tapawera is to be given consideration during a visit by the board to Tapawera to-day. ASSEMBLY HALLS The Westport North School Committee asked for the provision of an Assembly Hall. It was decided to reply stating that the board intended at the August conference with the Minister of Education, to take up the question of providing Assembly Halls for all schools of grade 5 and over. After hearing a report on an inspection of the heating system at Westport South, the board decide 1 to remove the present system and introduce radiators as soon as the equipment is available. It was decided to make application for a dental clinic at Granity, in order to make a room available for the school library. The remodelling of the shelter porch at Harakeke was approved. AIR RAID SHELTERS The chairman reported that the Minister of Education and the Public works Department were at present discussing the question of the removal of air raid shelters. The Board had, made an application for a grant to cover the cost of removing the shelters. The secretary reported that the Department’s reply to an application for a grant to cover the cost of erecting a new school at Hope had not yet been received. The Education Department wrote authorising the preparation of working plans for a teacher’s residence at Mahana. An offer by Mrs S. Kemp to donate a site of one quarter of an acre, was accepted and Mrs Kemp is to be thanked for her generous gift. It was reported that the Hon. C. F. Skinner is to interview the Minister of Health regarding the provision of a dental clinic at Mapua. A request by the Wakefield Committee for an extension of the heating system to the senior classroom was held over in the meantime. The Minister of Education advised that a grant for the transport of pupils from Puramahoi to Onekaka had been approved. The Wakefield Committee was granted £3 12s 6d lor incidental expenses. NEW POST OFFICE SITE The Minister of Education gave his approval to the transfer of a small portion of the Hampden street School site for the purpose of erecting a new Post Office.
