CABBAGES FOR TROOPS

NEW METHOD Or PACKING Canberra, April 7. A novel method of packing cabbages for despatch from Adelaide to troops in the north-western sector of Australia has been adopted by Commonwealth Food Control. Each cabbage is placed in a sealed wax envelope which isolates it and thus prevents any decay spreading to other cabbages. This method of packing has been so successful that cabbages can now be sent to Darwin with the possibility of only 25 per cent. loss. Formerly it wa s impossible to send cabbages to Darwin from Adelaide because entire consignments were lost before two-thirds of the 10-day rail and truck journey had been completed.
