OBITUARY

.MR JAMES CHANDLER There passed away in the person of James Chandler, a son of one of the first settlers In the Wangapeka Valley. Mr James Chandler, who was 73 years of age, was the second son of the late James Chandler. He was born in Wakefield and came to Wangapeka a fortnight- later, his mother carrying him on horseback. Mr J. Chandler and his brother felled most of the bush on his father’s section. As a young man he used to pack stores into the miners. Packing two horses, and riding one, he would start off at 5 a.m., and often not arrive home until 9 p.m. The tracks, being narrow and rough, there was always danger of the horses going over the bank. Mr Chandler had been farming in tho Wangapeka all his life. He married Miss Wray, who was teaching in the Wangapeka for five years. He leaves a widow, one son, Lance Chandler, of Wangapeka, and one daughter, Mrs H. Taylor, of Matariki.
