DROP IN PRODUCTION
WAIKATO COAL MINES Auckland. April 14 There was a drop of 18.799 tons, or nearly 9£ per cent, in the output of the Wa'kato coal mines for the first quarter of this year as compared with the same period in 1943. according to a statement compiled by the Waikato Collieries As social ion. Though production in February was nearly 5000 tons above the figure for February. 1943. this improve ment was more than ofTset in March The respective percentages of daily absenteeism at the five mines in March were 4.09. 7.2. 8.14. 8.53 and 3.04. Nineteen stopwork meetings were held in the Waikato field during March, causing the loss of 125 hours of working time, exclusive of two hours allowed each month by agreement for such meetings. A further day was lost in attending the funeral of two minfers. The 12 * hours of working time would have produced 5500 tons of coal, which, the statement adds, was lost through stopwork meetings which were unnecessary and which the miners had promised would not take place. This tonnage would have considerably reduced the drop of 9052 tons in March.—P A.
