ALICE ANSWERS HER LETTERS Benny Gibbs, Nelson: My word, Benny, how lucky Mummy is to have you to make* her an early morning cup of tea. I feel almost as excited as you are about the new bike, and I hope it won’t be long before it makes a trip to “The Mail” Office. Shirley Heenan: White Rabbit and I had such a feast of mushrooms the other day, Shirley, we aren’t sure if we can eat any more for ages. Did you have fun at the school picnic? Norma Nicholls, Belgrove: Are you going to pick hops when you aren’t at school, Norma? I suppose you could earn quite a lot of extra pocket money if you had the time to spare in the hop gardens. Austen Nuttall, Harakeke: How lovely to be able to play with Ken and his Jeffrey goat, Austen. Did you go and collect wood in the sleigh or just have games? I do think Jeffrey is a wonderful goat. Gwen Barrett, Stewart’s Estate: I am so glad you have joined the Wonderland Club, Gwen, and hope you will write and send in contributions often. How did you do in the swimming sports? Lilian Symes, Nelson: I can quite imagine how you miss the country, Lilian, but you will soon make lots of nice new friends in town, and you can always go for lovely picnics up the Maitai at the week-ends. Do write again. Rae Eves, Wakefield: Yes, I love writing letters, too, Rae. Have you filled the new scrap book yet? I should love to hear about what you have in it, please. Betty Ray, Motueka: -'lt was a very pleasant surprise to hear from you again, Betty, and we hope you will send in some more contributions. I like the pudding recipe very much, but am afraid White Rabbit’s ladies never lay six new eggs at a time. Joan Bickley, Takaka: Thank you for the poem. Joan. We are looking forward to another. How are you getting on at school, and what have you been doing during the weekends lately? Doreen Cox, Foxhill: No, I haven’t ever picked hops, Doreen. Aren’t they very sticky? Do tell me what you do and if it is very hard work. What have you growing in your vegetable garden? Dick Bickley, Takaka: Thank you for the riddle, Dick. Have you been eeling again? White Rabbit has been saving an egg for ages to break into the Maitai and entice the eels, but so far he hasn’t found time to go there.
